For centuries, Sandalwood has been loved for its warm, calming aroma. But overharvesting in the past caused a serious decline in native forests across Hawaii.
Today, the story is shifting in a really beautiful way…
Through the Kealakekua Mountain Reserve (KMR) on the Big Island, dōTERRA partners with local teams to help restore and protect native Sandalwood forests. This large-scale conservation effort focuses on caring for the land, protecting existing trees, and planting thousands more to support the future of the ecosystem.
In the early stages, harvesting focused only on dead or naturally fallen trees—giving younger trees the time they needed to grow and regenerate. With nurseries and ongoing planting programs, the forest continues to expand year after year.
The goal isn’t just to produce Sandalwood essential oil… it’s to restore an entire native forest and help it thrive for generations to come.
