Esseterre | Reviving Essential Oil Farming in Bulgaria
Bulgaria has a long, beautiful history of aromatic plant cultivation, but after the fall of Communism, much of the essential oil industry declined. Many farmers moved away from aromatic crops as distilleries disappeared and opportunities became limited.
To help bring that tradition back to life, dōTERRA established Esseterre Bulgaria in 2015—an advanced farming and distillation operation located in Dobrich, eastern Bulgaria. Today, Esseterre is one of the largest distilleries in the country and plays a key role in producing oils like Lavender and Melissa, which thrive in the region’s sunny climate and rich, well-drained soil.
The location was intentionally chosen so crops can be distilled quickly after harvest, which is especially important for delicate plants like Melissa. This helps preserve the integrity and quality of the essential oil.
Through Cō-Impact Sourcing, Esseterre partners directly with local farmers, offering fair pricing, consistent payments, and agricultural support. These relationships help farmers grow higher-value crops while bringing renewed investment and opportunity into the region.
